Paul celan selected poems6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() With this new edition the reader is given a great wealth of clearly demonstrable information for understanding Celan’s poetry. Special attention has been paid – in line with his poetology – to the ›inscribed date‹ of every poem. The commentary has also been reorganized and expanded considerably, especially thanks to the editor’s intensive research of Celan’s reading of the press. On this basis, the 2003 edition could be expanded by close to 60 poems, some of them appearing for the first time, and all of his texts underwent careful examination. In the meantime editions of his most important epistolary exchanges have been published, the critical editions have been completed, and research in Celan’s bequest library with its literary traces and annotations has forged ahead. When a complete and annotated edition of Celan’s poems first appeared in 2003, the indexing of such sources was still at its beginning. ![]() ![]() The history of their origins, sources, cross-references: broken down with summaries and individual notes.įor Paul Celan reading was always an experience as well: the books, journals, and daily newspapers he read were as much a source of his poems as personal encounters and political events. ![]() Close to 60 more poems than the 2003 edition. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mann not only talked to countless scientists and researchers he visited the places he writes about, and as a consequence, the book has a marvelously wide-ranging yet personal feel as we follow Mann from one far-flung corner of the world to the next. Building on the groundbreaking work of Alfred Crosby (author of The Columbian Exchange and, I’m proud to say, a fellow Nantucketer), Mann has written nothing less than the story of our world: how a planet of what were once several autonomous continents is quickly becoming a single, “globalized” entity. With his follow-up, 1493, Mann has taken it to a new, truly global level. It’s exhaustively researched but so wonderfully written that it’s anything but exhausting to read. I’m a big fan of Charles Mann’s previous book 1491, in which he provides a sweeping and provocative examination of North and South America prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus. An Unquiet Grave by P.J. Parrish6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() Zona ignores her mother’s cautions about hasty marriage, particularly to someone whose last wife (Shue’s second) died of a fall less than a year before. ![]() The infatuation is immediate and mutual, and the couple rushes to marry. However, after Zona’s child is adopted out, she meets handsome blacksmith “Trout” Shue. Heaster, a farm wife, worries about her only daughter, the beautiful and impractical Zona, who, at 20, has endangered her marriageability with an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. The setting veers back and forth between rural Greenbrier County in 1890s West Virginia and a segregated asylum “for the Colored Insane” in 1930. This tale takes a while to develop, as it progresses at the ambling pace of a one-horse buggy over muddy roads. McCrumb’s ( Prayers the Devil Answers, 2016, etc.) latest combines an Appalachian ghost story with a turn-of-the-last-century murder case. ![]()

This spunky, self-assured cat has always loved Rectangle Time-when the boy and the man he lives with curl up with their rectangle and read aloud from it.
