![]() ![]() The title character, Jessie Best, is a good young man in his 20s who is not as smart as other people. ![]() It is a quaint little community that reminds me of the TV show "Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman" but without the railroad or Native Americans. The town is full of colorful characters who all seem to want a say in what the young widow Althea should do with her life, her farm, and her toddler. This book is set in the early 1800s in a remote, tiny town in the mountains of Arkansas. It does have romantic elements and a happy ending like a romance would have, but the number of love scenes is very few (but moderately explicit) and the romance is not as strongly emphasized as it would be in a romance novel. I would classify this as romantic historical fiction. I was so pleased by this novel and by the narration. This is the first book I have read or listened to by Pamela Morsi, and now she is one of my favorite authors. I received a free copy of the audiobook in return for an honest review. I read that the narrator is from Arkansas, and I do think the accents sound authentic (I have visited that state twice.) The narrator has such a pleasing tone of voice and is very gifted at sounding like different people, including men, women, and children. ![]() His performance really added to the novel. Would you consider the audio edition of Simple Jess to be better than the print version? ![]()

The Evil One by J.N. Williamson6/5/2023 ![]() ![]() She tries to pet a horse on the ferry, persisting even when the horse starts to spook at her touch. We get a glimpse of how her refusal to give up can have a dangerous side when she is heading out to the old Morgan horse farm on the ferry. This woman refuses admit defeat, refuses to give up, and that is both her strength and her fatal flaw. Naomi Watts’ performace as the driven Rachel Keller is wonderful. The Ring‘s plot unfolds in a less straightforward fashion than Ringu’s, and I enjoyed the other changes made for the American version. The central disaster has been turned from a volcanic eruption to the mysterious death of the Morgan horses. This movie closely follows the course set by Ringu, though there are definite changes the protagonist father is turned from a conflicted psychic to a feckless videographer, and the protagonist mother’s character has taken on a hard, heedless edge. Those of you who haven’t seen the film would do well to read no further…. The movie deals with uncovering the horror behind videotape that kills those who watch it. I encourage all of you who enjoy intelligent horror/suspense films to check this one out if you haven’t already. I’ve seen literally hundreds of horror movies, and I was genuinely creeped out at the end of this one. ![]() ![]() The Ring, a 2002 American re-make of a Japanese film called Ringu, is a wonderfully disquieting film. ![]()

In the Dust by Takani Dillon6/4/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() He met some colorful people, got disillusioned and grew up as person. Well, Eddy did get to know the world some more, for better or for worse. What the fuck did I know about life and the world?” "Every sage street philosopher I admired was either dead or aged past relevance, and now it was my time, but what did I have to say? I was a spoiled rich kid from the middle of nowhere. I was immediately intrigued by this haughty young man, whose life was sure to be eventful. So, what really made him a character worth being the focus of a coming-of-age story. ![]() Right upon page one, we got introduced to Eddy’s cynism and impulsiveness. ![]() I saved this book until the end of the year, and I was rewarded with a read that ended the year on a very high note.Īgain, the investigations of our intrepid foursome are sizzlingly current and not of the cold, forgotten kind. ![]() After falling hard for these characters and their witty camaraderie, I expected book two, The Man Who Died Twice, to be one of my best reads in 2021. The resourcefulness these four bring to the table is impressive, even to local constable Donna DeFreitas and her boss, DCI Chris Hudson, who by the end of the first book become friends of the Thursday Murder Club members. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim find murder and crime right under their noses though. There have been senior citizen detectives or amateur sleuths before, but here was a group of septuagenarians living at a retirement home in Kent, England who have banded together to add some excitement to their lives by reviewing unsolved murder cold cases. When I read last year's The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, I was thrilled with its unique entry into the mystery/crime genre. ![]()

Batman earth one geoff johns6/3/2023 ![]() He wanted a Batmobile that's believable and functional, which is what Reeves has done for Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader with a sleek muscle car. 2 also has Bruce using Lucius Fox and the Wayne Enterprises science team to build a car that wasn't a tank. While the Riddler in Earth One turned out to be one of the inner-circle, trying to take his colleagues out so he could receive their share of the empire, the vibe he gave off matches Dano's energy. Earth One Riddler also took this route, pushing Gotham and the Bat to their breaking points because he knew the city needed a savior who was unafraid to take down the privileged, not just some vigilante hiding behind a mask who only dealt with scum in alleys. He kills key members of an elite circle who inherited Cobblepot's empire, actually doing the city a favor in the process.įans saw hints of this with Paul Dano's Riddler in The Batman teaser as he calls out the lies of the city, the cops, Batman and even the Wayne family. 2, however, uses the Riddler as a warrior for social justice. 1 which dealt with the Bat cutting his teeth and taking down Mayor Cobblepot after investigating the death of his parents in a political scheme after Thomas ran for mayor. ![]() Reeves' movie will follow Batman in his second year of crimefighting, and Earth One matches this narrative perfectly. ![]()
